Case Study: Sproutt × Low Carbon Materials Hub — Pioneering a Smarter Path to Low Carbon Infrastructure and Landscaping Projects

250902_1

Sproutt is a multidisciplinary consultancy that brings together expertise in civil engineering, stormwater, traffic engineering, landscape architecture, strategic asset management and digital solutions. They’re known for providing end-to-end services, from early feasibility through to design, delivery and long-term management, and for helping councils, developers, state agencies and industry create infrastructure and places that are practical, resilient and sustainable by design.

Background

Embodied carbon measurement has become one of the most critical and time-consuming parts of delivering sustainable projects. For infrastructure and landscaping projects, where the volume and diversity of materials are vast, traditional methods often involve painstaking manual data entry and fragmented datasets. Recognising these challenges, Sproutt partnered with Low Carbon Materials Hub (LCMH) to embed Nulla, an AI-powered embodied carbon co-pilot, into their workflow. The result is a faster, more accurate, and more strategic approach to embodied carbon measurement that empowers Sproutt’s team to spend less time wrangling spreadsheets and more time driving meaningful carbon reductions.

Challenges

Sproutt faced the same obstacles many engineering and consulting firms encounter:

  • Manual burden – Large quantities of material line items required countless hours of data entry.

  • Fragmented data sources – No single platform allowed direct access to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and trusted datasets.

  • Framework alignment – Existing embodied carbon calculators often failed to map neatly against Sproutt’s internal methodologies and intellectual property.

  • Lost opportunities – With most time spent on compliance and reporting, little capacity remained for deeper benchmarking and decarbonisation strategy.

The Pilot Project

To address these barriers, Sproutt and LCMH worked together to integrate Nulla into Sproutt’s embodied carbon workflow. The collaboration focused on three core outcomes:

  1. Streamline workflows – Automate the embodied carbon exercise by integrating LCMH’s extensive digitised EPD database with Nulla’s mapping engine.

  2. Customise outputs – Adapt Nulla’s framework to tightly align with Sproutt’s internal processes and project methodologies, protecting organisational IP while enhancing consistency.

  3. Enable strategic value – Free up time and resources so Sproutt could focus on identifying hotspots, optimising designs, and exploring low-carbon material alternatives.

Results

1. Workflow Efficiency

With Nulla, Sproutt reduced what was once days of manual data entry into a process measured in hours. This freed up valuable engineering time that could be redirected into higher-value services, such as scenario testing and design optimisation. The integration of LCMH’s digitised EPD database allowed Sproutt to map and select product-specific data seamlessly, eliminating the inefficiencies of fragmented spreadsheets.

2. Tailored to Sproutt’s Needs

LCMH customised Nulla’s framework to mirror Sproutt’s internal methodology, meaning the outputs aligned perfectly with their existing reporting and project workflows. This gave Sproutt the assurance that Nulla wasn’t just another generic tool, but a bespoke co-pilot designed to support their intellectual property and way of working.

3. Better Client Outcomes

By spending less time on compliance-driven tasks, Sproutt could devote more effort to explore low carbon alternatives and reduction strategies for clients. This improved both the quality and depth of advice delivered, positioning Sproutt as a forward-thinking partner in low-carbon design.

4. Building Competitive Advantage

Perhaps the most strategic outcome was the ability to run internal benchmarking projects. By using Nulla across multiple projects, Sproutt can now develop embodied carbon benchmarks by project type, component, and system. These benchmarks provide Sproutt with a genuine competitive edge in the market, enabling them to differentiate their services and demonstrate leadership in evidence-based carbon reduction.

Looking Ahead

With Nulla now embedded as a co-pilot, Sproutt is positioned to scale its embodied carbon services, extend benchmarking across its portfolio, and continue leading the way in low carbon infrastructure and landscaping.

For LCMH, this partnership demonstrates the adaptability of Nulla — not just as a generic calculator, but as a customisable, AI-powered framework that empowers organisations to accelerate their sustainability journey while protecting and enhancing their own methodologies.

Conclusion

The Sproutt × LCMH partnership proves that embodied carbon measurement doesn’t need to be a manual bottleneck. With Nulla, consultants can unlock efficiency, consistency, and new strategic opportunities — transforming embodied carbon from a compliance exercise into a driver of competitive advantage and meaningful decarbonisation.
